On March 12, the San Francisco Giants started the week by beating the Kansas City Royals 2-1 in a low-scoring game dominated by pitching. Scheduling for the rest of the week is filled with seven more contests against six different opponents. Big questions for the team will continue to be answered in bits and pieces throughout the week. Of course, the win-loss record in the Cactus League is not nearly as important as the player developments during these contests. Still, everything is going well for the team right now.
Remaining days of the week are filled with at least one contest each, including a split-squad game on March 17 (Saturday). San Francisco will play the Chicago Cubs in day games on March 13 and 16. The Cleveland Indians (March 14) and Seattle Mariners (March 15) are also opponents during the week. During the weekend, the team faces the Oakland Athletics and Los Angeles Dodgers on March 17 while ending the seven-day stretch against the San Diego Padres on March 18.
Obviously, we are witnessing an all-around powerful team at the moment. That includes offense, defense, and pitching among other things. Currently, the Giants sport a 8-3 record in the Cactus League while outscoring opponents by a total of 24 runs. Plus, the offense is coming from numerous players, and many of them are the projected regulars for the lineup. There are no glaring problems for this club at the moment.
You cannot really expect the team to keep up this kind of performance in the long run, but I have no complaints right now. Fortunately, recovering players (Buster Posey, Brian Wilson, and Freddy Sanchez) are back in action and doing fine right off the bat with no major problems. On top of that, the pitchers are heating up and the lineup has produced the third most runs in the Cactus League as of March 12. The longer the team keeps this up, the better.
For this week, we will see whether….
1. The offense can keep up its current pace.
2. Posey, Sanchez, and Wilson can continue smooth recoveries.
3. Brandon Belt, Aubrey Huff, or Brett Pill will excel at first base.
4. Other situations will play out with positive results.
At the moment, neither fans nor anyone else can complain about the San Francisco Giants. The team is doing well during the pre-season, which is about half-way finished. All that matters is the results from April 6 until the end of the regular season though. For now, the hope for success definitely there. In fact, the team is succeeding without any major issues. It is just Spring Training, but nobody expected the organization to do this well.
Will this run continue into the regular season?
