While surfing through the Kickstarter website on March 13, 2012, I ran across a fledgling, skater owned and operated skateboard company that makes an interesting product. The firm is also holding a launch party in Hawaii later this week. Here are the details:
About the Campaign
The Hawaii based company is called Daniel Young Skateboards and its owner is hand crafting some pretty amazing skateboards. He's currently seeking investors to help him acquire a laser engraver so he can engrave his logo onto the company's boards. Young has until April 14, 2012, to reach his goal of $35,000. Those that choose to invest in the company's Kickstarter campaign are eligible to receive a bevy of interesting items, based on the amount of support pledged. Some of the items up for grabs are limited edition skateboards, skateboard shaped keychains and Moleskine notebooks. High-end investors can even score a hand painted longboard hanger by renowned artist Mario Quezada and a trip to Hawaii. While in Hawaii, those investors will get to temporarily work alongside Young and design a custom skateboard series.
About the Skateboards
The skate decks are created from exotic woods and sport a layer of Waimea Bay sand and lacquer in lieu of grip tape. In my opinion, the skateboards are a thing of beauty. Of course I have always felt that way about skateboards that allow the inherent qualities of wood to shine through. A lot of commercially manufactured skate decks are made from hard maple veneer. Young's skate decks, however, are made from woods like koa and mango. Koa is indigenous to Hawaii, comes in deep rich colors with a natural sheen and is incredibly strong. Mango, on the other hand, is a water resistant hardwood and resembles teak. Young also crafts his decks out of lychee, ohia and kamani.
About the Launch Party
Those interested in seeing samples of his skateboards should log onto the company's website and RSVP for the launch party. It is set to start at 7 p.m. on March 16, 2012, at The Greenhouse Innovation Hub on Auahi Street in Honolulu. Admission is gratis.
