After seven years that included two Super Bowl wins, the New York Giants, my favorite NFL team, released RB Brandon Jacobs on March 9, 2012.

New York Giants Released RB Brandon Jacobs After Seven Years and Two Super Bowl Wins

Brandon Jacobs ran for 4,849 yards on 1,078 carries for a 4.5 yards per carry average for the Giants. Jacobs rushed for 56 TD's. He also caught 80 passes for 730 yards, 9.1 yards per catch, and had four receiving TD's. He helped us win the Super Bowl in 2008, and in 2012.

At 6' 4" and 256 lbs, Brandon Jacobs was the Giants big back. Considering his size though, he was one of the softest RB's I've ever watched play in the NFL. The Giants used to bring Brandon Jacobs in for short yardage situations, and he was not great at picking up the necessary yardage, despite his size.

Giants Will Need Another RB to Team with Ahmad Bradshaw

The Giants other main RB, Ahmad Bradshaw, is only 5' 10" and 214 lbs, but he is much better in short yardage situations than Brandon Jacobs was. Bradshaw's problem though is that he often gets injured. So the New York Giants will need another RB to replace Brandon Jacobs.

One of the RB's in the 2012 NFL Draft that I think the Giants could draft in the later rounds who has enough talent to fill Brandon Jacobs shoes is Temple's Bernard Pierce.

Bernard Pierce was a Great RB for Temple in College

Bernard Pierce started for three years at Temple, and declared for the 2012 NFL Draft as a junior. At Temple, Bernard Pierce rushed for 3,570 yards on 663 carries, for a 5.4 yards per carry average. Pierce rushed for 53 TD's at Temple. He also caught 19 passes for 178 yards, for a 9.4 yards per catch average, and one receiving TD.

In the 2012 NFL Draft combine, Bernard Pierce ran a 4.49 time in the 40. Brandon Jacobs ran the 40 in 4.56 at the NFL combine. Bernard Pierce is projected to go as high as the third round in the draft, but it's possible the Giants could draft him in later rounds.

Living in New Jersey between Philadelphia and New York, I got a chance to watch Bernard Pierce play a bit at Temple. He always impressed me with his talent and hard nosed running, and he is one of the biggest RB's available in the 2012 draft, though nobody is as big as Brandon Jacobs.

Giants Should Consider Drafting Temple RB Bernard Pierce to Replace Brandon Jennings

In the 2005 NFL Draft, the New York Giants took RB Brandon Jacobs in the fourth round out of Southern Illinois. We won two Super Bowls with Jacobs as one of the teams primary RB's, and he will need to be replaced now that he is released.

In my opinion, Temple's Bernard Pierce is one of the RB's the Giants should look at possibly drafting in the 2012 NFL Draft to replace Brandon Jacobs.
