New York Rangers left wing Carl Hagelin will sit out Games 3, 4 and 5 of his team's first-round series.
Hagelin had received a major penalty Saturday for an elbow that knocked Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson out of the game.
The Rangers rookie said his elbow came up as Alfredsson raised his stick to brace for the hit, but Shanahan said, "We do not feel this is a reasonable excuse for the elbow that took place."
Hagelin had no previous disciplinary action in his first NHL season.
"I never tried to hurt anyone on the ice," he told reporters before the ruling came down. "That's not the type of player I am."
Hagelin said he had texted an apology to Alfredsson, who's a hero in Hagelin's native Sweden.
"He's one of my favorite players," he said.
Ottawa coach Paul MacLean told reporters that Alfredsson was feeling better, but a decision on his Game 3 participation won't be decided until later.
Shanahan also held a hearing Sunday with Senators defenseman Matt Carkner, who punched a defenseless Brian Boyle several times, and will talk Monday to Chicago's Andrew Shaw, who charged Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith on Saturday.
