As a surf fan, the morning of Friday March 30, 2012 I had my eyes focused on the webcast of the Vans Pier Classic Pro Men's and Pro Junior Men's surfing competition. Given Brazilian Ian Gouveia's pristine 10-point jaw-dropper during the contest's heats on Thursday afternoon, I was thoroughly stoked for another round. Here's a quick look at some of the results:
Heat Results
Heat 1 of Round of 64 on Friday started out with Australian Mitch Crews scoring 12.34 points to American Brad Ettinger's 11.83 points. Cory Arrambide and Blake Jones trailed behind. Then things really got interesting for me in Heat 13. In Heat 13 American Gabe Kling literally killed it. He was up against Ian Gentil, Oliver Kurtz and Jake Halstead. Gabe's moves were smooth and his final score of 13.07 proved it.
Chase Wilson continued the intensity in Heat 14 against Chris Foster, Michael Dunphy and Nathaniel Curran. There were a good seven to eight decent size waves and the surfers made the best of them, especially Wilson. He unleashed a jaw-dropping aerial that had me on the edge of my seat. It also helped to earn him an impressive 14.84 points and secure the win.
One of my favorite heats, however, had to be Heat 15 with American Luke Davis. Davis caught epic air and left fellow surfers Kekoa Bacalso, Nobuyuki Osawa and Jesse Merle-Jones struggling to keep up. It was obvious that Osawa and Bacalso were trying their best, but they were woefully unsuccessful. Davis was clearly on fire. He appeared in full control of his surfboard and literally dominated the entire heat. It was a thrill to watch him compete. Davis finished 1st with 14.66 points. Jesse Merle-Jones also gave it his best shot and managed to land in 2nd with 9.30 points.
Venezuela's Francisco Bellorin and American Connor Coffin also put on quite a show in Heat 16. Both showed tremendous speed, style and skill. Coffin finished the heat in 1st with 13.04 points and Bellorin trailed behind him in 2nd with 11.73 points.
Upcoming Events
The Vans Pier Classic Pro Men's Round of 32 is poised to kick off at 8 a.m. sharp on Saturday March 31st, 2012 with predictions of strong swell and even more intense competition. The Pro Junior Men's Round of 64 is anticipated to follow around 11:20 a.m. I know that I will be watching. I can't wait to see if Wilson and Davis continue ripping up the competition. It should prove to be another exciting day regardless.
