The sizzling surf action at the Vans Pier Classic in Huntington Beach, California, continued at 8 a.m. on March 31, 2012. Of course I was logged onto the webcast with coffee in hand when it did. Round of 32 was up first. Here's a quick look at some of the day's results:

Heat Results

The first heat of the day started out strong with American Jeremy Johnston taking on Aussie Mitch Crews, Hawaiian Hank Gaskell and Japan's Teppei Tajima. The swell allowed for high scores and equally high spirits among surf fans. Gaskell racked up an eye-popping 16.60 points leaving Mitch Crews falling in behind him with 12.66 points. Johnston was no doubt frustrated because he only missed out on 3rd place by a sea foam thin margin. He finished the heat with 12.63 points. All in all, it wasn't a bad start.

Round of 32, Heat 2 was dominated by American Nathan Yeomans, who was able to score a solid 10.50 points. Brazilian Krystian Kymerson trailed in behind him with 9.70. At least Kymerson still fared better than his countryman Peterson Crisanto did in Heat 3. He took a shellacking from American Chris Ward and Peruvian Cristobal De Col.

One of my favorite moments of the day came in Heat 4 thanks to some serious aerials. In Heat 4 American Tanner Gudauskas took on Christian Saenz, Evan Valiere and Marco Fernandez. Given Fernandez's earlier performance, I had expected to see him rip things up. Instead it was Tanner Gudauskas who took off. His aerials were truly beautiful. He had impeccable form and speed. He finished the heat with 13 points leaving the other three to undoubtedly contemplate what the heck just happened. Results from all the days' heats are available online.

Upcoming Surf Action

The Vans Pier Classic Pro Junior Men's and Pro Men's Quarterfinals are expected to kick off on Sunday April 1 at 8 a.m. Once things wind down at Huntington Beach, surf fans may want to scope out the action at the ASP Rangiroa Pro Junior in Rangiroa, French Polynesia. It started on March 30 and is slated to continue through April 4. All the surf action is being broadcast live online. Of course there is also the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia to look forward to as well. It is set to get underway on April 3 and run through April 14. Looks like April is already shaping up to be a good month for surf fans!
