'Star Wars' and video games: A look back - USA TODAY
Apr 3rd 2012, 16:55

Video games and Star Wars have a long history together, dating back to the days of the original trilogy.

Dozens of titles covering all six films and beyond have launched since 1982, when the first game titled Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back debuted on the Atari 2600.

Want to take a trip back through the life of Star Wars in video game form? Here are a couple places to start:

-- GameTrailers has an incredible 10-part documentary from 2008 called The Star Wars Retrospective that covers every single title launched to date. For a sampling, check out the first episode below.

-- If you prefer to take a photographic journey instead, tech magazine PC World has a visual history from 2010 that takes readers through to the release of 2009 title The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes.

Meanwhile, here are five of my favorite Star Wars titles (with videos):

The Empire Strikes Back. It was you versus a constant stream of AT-AT Walkers. Anyone else seeing a downside here?

Star Wars (1983). I still vividly remember being awestruck at the sit-down cabinet, which you didn't see too often in arcades. It also recreated one of the classic moments from the first movie: Luke Skywalker's speed run through the Death Star.

Star Wars Battlefront. The bulk of players' video game time in the Star Wars universe was spent attacking Stormtroopers, so it was cool to reverse roles in this strategic shooter. Only difference was they were way more accurate.

Star Wars: Republic Commando. This was one of the more intriguing titles launched under the Star Wars label. Released in 2005, it was a tactical first-person shooter for PC and the original Xbox where players lead an elite clone commando squad, dispensing orders and carefully planning attacks.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter. Not the best Star Wars game out there, but it was still enjoyable to assume the role of Jango Fett, the "father" of notable bounty hunter Boba Fett. Having a jetpack didn't hurt either.

Of course, there are several other notable Star Wars titles out there, including the LEGO Star Wars series, X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and the just-released Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO from studio BioWare.

Readers, what are your favorite Star Wars video games?
