Yahoo is partnering Vuguru, the digital video studio founded by Michael Eisner's Tornante Company, as part of its broader effort to ramp up original video production. Under their agreement, the companies plan to jointly develop multiple scripted series for distribution through Yahoo Screen, the Web portal's video hub.
Vuguru most recently released "The Booth at the End," starring Xander Berkley and distributed by Hulu, and "Don't Ask Don't Tell," a film adaptation of Marc Wolf's one-man Off Broadway show. Last year, the studio financed and produced seven full-length scripted projects and announced a major partnership with Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment to launch a premium YouTube channel called "Stan Lee's World of Heroes."
Vuguru's first gained wide attention through its initial 2007 project, "Prom Queen," an online reality show debuting on MySpace and consisting of 80 episodes lasting 90-seconds each.
Yahoo most recently launched its own dramatic reality series "Remaking America," focusing on six families across the country as they deal with unemployment, veteran affairs and the housing market during the 2012 election year. Last month, Yahoo also announced a new slate of original comedy shows featuring talent such as Seth Morris of Funny or Die and Saturday Night Live writer Mike O'Brien.
Yahoo and Vuguru announced their new pact at the SXSW conference Monday.
