Surfers and surf fans alike have a lot to celebrate the week of March 28, 2012. For starters, the Vans Pier Classic is kicking off today. There's also the promise of spectacular swell for the start of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach next month. But that's not all there is to cheer about. Fans also received some more good news concerning another surfing event. Here's more:
About the Announcement
It seems that the Coastal Edge East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) presented by Vans is now an Association of Surfing Professionals' (ASP) 6-Star event. Personally, I couldn't be happier to learn of the competition's upgrade. With the shiny new rating comes a stellar $155,000 prize purse, which will undoubtedly lure some of surfing's rising talents to Virginia Beach. I suspect that a few celebrities might show up too. I even read in one news report that President Obama has purportedly been sent an invitation. If the allegation is true, it will be interesting to see if he shows up.
The Coastal Edge ECSC's new status has also allegedly caught the eye of the NBC Sports Network. The NBC Sports Network made news last year by announcing the launch of a 2012 Red Bull Signature Series. As a fan, I can't help but wonder if an ASP Signature Series isn't far behind. There's no telling for certain at this point. If NBC did decide to go that route, it would be perfect timing considering that it's the surfing event's 50th Anniversary.
About the Surfing Championships
Although the Coastal Edge ECSC has been around since the early 1960s, it hasn't always enjoyed a continuous spot on the ASP's calendar. As a matter of fact, it was missing from the venerable organization's schedule for many years. Thankfully, in 2011 it resurfaced on the organization's calendar as a 4-Star event. This year the Coastal Edge ECSC is currently scheduled to take place August 20 through August 26, 2012 at Virginia Beach's Oceanfront. It is open to all surfers who sign up for the event before the deadline and remit an entrance fee. Contest entry forms are available on the event's website. Additional details may also be found on the United States Surfing Federation's website. In addition to the surfing competition, there are a host of other activities that are in the works. Among them are live musical entertainment, a skate event and a swimsuit competition. Given the event's new rating and the popularity of the area in general, those planning to attend should make their travel plans as soon as possible.
